Are you concerned that you may be experiencing discrimination in your search for housing in New Philadelphia?  While we would love to believe that discrimination doesn’t occur in our city, it can happen.  The information found here should help you if you feel you are a victim of housing discrimination.

How do I know if I’m experience housing discrimination?

The Fair Housing Amendments Act specifically prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, family status or national origin in:

  • Sale or rental of dwellings
  • Residential real estate related transactions
  • Provision of services and facilities in connection with such activities

 Simply stated, it is unlawful to:

  • Refuse to sell, rent finance or insure housing or property
  • Tell any person that housing is not available for inspection, sale, rent or lease
  • Refuse to lend money for the purchase, construction, rehabilitation, repair or maintenance of housing property
  • Discriminate against any person in the terms and conditions of fire, extended coverage or homeowners insurance
  • Refuse to consider income of both husband and wife
  • Print, publish or circulate any statement or advertisement which would indicate a preference or limitations
  • Deny any person membership in any multiple listing or real estate service
